RM1.25 Million Boost for F&N Chairman’s Award
High-Achieving Children of the F&N Family Recognised for Excellence
Subang Jaya, August 13, 2008 – Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd has injected an additional RM1.25 million into the coffers of its F&N Chairman’s Award to commemorate the Group’s 125th anniversary.
Inaugurated in 2003 in conjunction with its 120th anniversary with an initial funding of RM1.2 million, the Award recognises high achieving children of the F&N Group’s employees.
Another 206 children of F&N employees celebrated the receipt of the 2008 F&N Chairman’s Award valued at RM257,200 recently for their achievements in academic and extra curricular activities. To-date, RM1,067,700 has been disbursed to 898 students.
This year’s event was made all the more special with the presence of YB Dato’ Shahrir bin Abdul Samad, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs who presented a Special Award to Dhanaraj a/l Thuraisamy, 17, for his 14 As achieved in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia 2007 examination. Winner of the Anugerah Pelajar Cemerlang SPM Terbaik 2007 from his school and the MIC 8th President's Merit Award,Dhanaraj has been offered a Federal Scholarship by Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (JPA) to pursue Medicine in India under the Overseas Degree Programme for Year 2008.
Also present were F&N Holdings chairman, YAM Tengku Syed Badarudin Jamalullail and chief executive officer Tan Ang Meng who later presented the other recipients with their awards.
YB Dato’ Shahrir Abdul Samad had earlier launched the inaugural F&N Out-Do-Yourself Award (OYA) aimed to recognize individuals who rise above the call of duty to perform standout deeds ranging from bravery, chivalry, promoting nation building to outstanding sports, academic or business performance.
“The OYA Award and the Chairman’s Award are the kinds of endeavours that put a face and a heart on a company,” said Dato’ Shahrir. “Ask anyone in Britain if they know who Fraser & Neave are and they will have no idea. But ask any Malaysian and they will tell you exactly what kind of products F&N markets. It has become a true Malaysian brand.”
Dato’ Shahrir went on to say how this form of corporate social responsibility keeps the consumers and more importantly, the employees, close at heart. “There are some people working at F&N who represent the third generation of employees in their families. That kind of dedication only occurs when an individual feels as if he has a stake in the company. These people are valued as part of the F&N family.
And that much was true for Thuraisamy a/l Nadeson who proudly watched his son, Dhanaraj a/l Thuraisamy walk up on stage to shake the hand of the Minister and the leaders of his company and receive the Special Award for academic excellence.
“When my son is recognised for his achievements, I feel that F&N is also acknowledging me as well,” said Thuraisamy, a Plant Supervisor of the Engineering Department at Premier Milk (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. “He is my offspring and his successes reflects on me and my work.”
Said Dhanaraj “This award is different from all the other awards I have received because this one is for my father. The trophy may have gone to me but it also celebrates him as the person who made me who I am.”
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, F&N Holdings chief executive officer, Tan Ah Meng said that the F&N Chairman’s Award was the Group’s way of acknowledging employees’ children for their hard work and also to motivate them to seek excellence in education and extracurricular activities.
“We share the joy of these parents when we see their kids collect this award. I am very proud of the award winners and commend our employees for encouraging their children to become high achievers,” said Tan.
13-year-old Wei Yin was surprised that she did so well. “I only thought I would get 4 or 5 As for my UPSR. Getting 6As makes receiving this award so much sweeter,” she said happily.
His father Ben Yeong, a Financial Controller at F&N Dairies said, “I am so proud of my daughter and am absolutely overwhelmed to see her receive this award. This type of initiatives by the company really motivates our kids to excel in school, become better citizens and contribute to society.”
That sentiment was echoed by the advisor to the Pusat Bandar Puchong Residents Association, David Tan. The former Union Chairman also added, “This award doesn’t just celebrate my daughter’s achievements but also rewards my services at F&N. I have worked at F&N for 33 years and I am very happy that my employers have chosen to reward us in this way.”
His daughter Amelia Tan, has just completed her Form 4 and will be pursuing her dream as a professional after finishing her Form 5. “This is the second time I’m receiving this award,” she said. “I’m happy. Getting this has given me a renewed optimism to try harder for the future.”
16-year-old Amelia was surprised that she did so well. “I only thought I would get 4 or 5 As for my PMR. Getting 7 straight As makes receiving this award so much sweeter,” she said happily.
